Japan celebrates the 70th anniversary of the LP with the world's first "tocatas" orchestra.
On June 18, 1948, the record company Columbia Records organized a press conference at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York to present a new product to the world: the twelve-inch vinyl record or LP (long play). The first recording recorded in this format was the Concierto en Mi minor Opus 64, by Felix Mendelssohn, performed by the violinist Nathan Milstein with the accompaniment of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bruno Walter.
Seventy years later, the Japanese brand Technics (subsidiary of Panasonic) wanted to warm up the atmosphere before the tributes to the format king for music lovers with a proposal as unusual as surprising. It is a turntable orchestra composed of sixty renowned DJs, including DJ Rena, the very young (only 12 years old) world champion DMC (Disco Mix Club) of 2017, who has executed a version of Mendelssohn's piece through a "mix" of eight compositions by Vivaldi, Rossini and Paganini, using the different techniques of "turntablism" such as "scratch", "crossfade" or "beat juggling".
